Helldivers 2 PS5: The Ultimate Guide to Spreading Managed Democracy
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative third-person shooter available on PS5 and PC, tasking players with liberating star systems from hostile alien factions through intense, objective-based missions. Success hinges on teamwork, strategic loadouts, and a keen understanding of the battlefield. This guide provides comprehensive information to help Helldivers effectively contribute to the Galactic War.
Crossplay Functionality
Helldivers 2 fully supports crossplay across PS5, PC, and Xbox, enabling players on different platforms to squad up seamlessly. This feature is automatically enabled for all players, allowing for unified matchmaking across platforms.
To play with specific friends on other platforms, you'll need to use the in-game Friend Code system. Open the Social menu (press R3 on PS5), locate the 'Your Friend Code' section, and generate an eight-digit code to share with your squadmates. Your friends can then enter this code via the 'Search' option in their Social menu to send a friend request, which you must accept.
While crossplay is robust, Helldivers 2 currently does not support cross-save or cross-progression, meaning your unlocks and progress are tied to the platform you're playing on. Players can disable crossplay in the 'Gameplay' tab of the 'Options' menu if they prefer platform-only matchmaking. Additionally, lobby privacy can be adjusted to 'Public', 'Friends Only', or 'Invite Only' for controlled team sessions.
Essential Tips for New Recruits
Successfully completing operations requires more than just firepower. Here are crucial tips for new Helldivers:
Objective Focus: Missions are primarily objective-focused. Your main goal is to complete the orange-marked objectives on your map; kills or personal survival are secondary to mission success. Optional objectives and collectibles found on the map will yield more XP and rewards.
Friendly Fire is Always On: Every weapon, stratagem, and even Hellpod landings can harm teammates. Be mindful of your shots, angles, and stratagem placements. Accidents happen, so a quick 'I'm sorry' can maintain team camaraderie.
Utilize Stratagems: Stratagems are vital for restocking ammo, calling down heavy weapons, air strikes, and reinforcements. Use them frequently and strategically. Call in support stratagems as soon as you land.
Aim with Precision: Moving while aiming can cause your reticle to sway. For precision, try crouching or going prone to steady your aim, especially against armored targets or for headshots.
The Dive Mechanic: The dive (going prone) can be used to quickly get behind cover, avoid airstrikes, or reduce explosive damage. Tapping the dive button allows for a knee slide, while a double-tap provides an extra jump.
Scavenge and Resupply: Alien battlefields are littered with ammunition, medals, and scientific samples. Collect everything you can. If a teammate falls, pillage their corpse for dropped weapons, ammo, and samples. When a resupply drops, ensure everyone gets a pack before taking extras.
Stick Together: Enemies will actively try to separate your squad. Stay with your teammates to avoid being overwhelmed and to provide mutual support.
Mark Everything: Use the ping system to mark enemy patrols, mines, ammo, objectives, turrets, and supply drops. This helps teammates stay aware, survive, and find resources.
Manage Ammo: Any ammo remaining in your magazine is lost when you reload, unless the weapon has an internal magazine or cooling system. Fire as many bullets as possible before reloading.
Avoid Unnecessary Fights: Engaging every patrol you encounter wastes time and lives. Many objectives can be destroyed with a single stratagem or grenade, allowing you to move on quickly.
Stealth: Basic stealth mechanics exist. Sound from weapons (35-70m), sprinting (30m), and even walking (20m) can alert enemies. Visual detection ranges from 45m standing to 15m prone.
Weapons of Justice: Primaries & Support
Choosing the right weaponry is critical for success. Weapons are acquired from the Acquisition Centre using Medals or Super Credits. Hold the reload button to check weapon settings like fire rate.
Primary Weapons
Different primary weapons excel against different enemy factions:
Against Terminids & Illuminate (Mindless Masses): Focus on weapons with Area of Effect (AoE) and crowd control capabilities for close-to-mid-range engagements. Examples include the Breaker Incendiary shotgun or Cookout shotgun for Terminids, and the PLAS-1 Scorcher, PLAS-101 Purifier, or Sickle/Double-Edge Sickle for Illuminate. The CB-9 Explosive Crossbow and R-36 Eruptor are also highly effective for their high burst damage and ability to destroy enemy structures.
Against Automatons: Prioritize precision and armor penetration for long-range engagements. The PLAS-1 Scorcher, PLAS-101 Purifier, Sickle/Double-Edge Sickle, Explosive Crossbow, or Eruptor are strong choices. The AR-2 Coyote offers decent damage with medium penetration and a fast reload.
Beginner Recommendation: The Liberator assault rifle, Redeemer secondary, and High-Explosive grenade provide a solid starting loadout.
Support Weapons
Support weapons are called in via stratagems and often provide heavy firepower or specialized utility:
Railgun: An S-tier support weapon with immense firepower, capable of dealing with the game's biggest bosses. Use 'unsafe mode' by holding R for more powerful shots, but be wary of overcharging.
Autocannon: A versatile weapon with strong armor penetration (AP4) that can take out various targets, including Stingrays, Overseers, Harvesters, and can close warp self autonomy.
Grenade Launcher: A solid all-rounder for clearing groups of foes and closing bug holes from a distance, though less effective against heavy armor.
Expendable Anti-Tank (EAT-17) / Recoilless Rifle: Essential for dealing with heavily armored enemies like Chargers, Hulks, and Automaton dropships.
Flamethrower: An excellent anti-horde tool, particularly against Terminids.
Freedom-Fighting Armor: Types and Perks
Armor in Helldivers 2 consists of a body, helmet, and cape, each offering unique stats (Armor Rating, Speed, Stamina Regen) and a passive perk. Armor is acquired through Warbonds or the Superstore.
Armor Types
Light Armor: Offers the best speed and stamina regeneration at the cost of armor rating. Ideal for outrunning melee units, especially against Terminids and Illuminate (Mindless Masses).
Medium Armor: Provides a balanced mix of speed and resilience.
Heavy Armor: Maximizes protection but reduces speed and stamina regeneration. Safer for Automaton missions due to their ranged attacks.
Recommended Armor Perks
Extra Padding: Boosts your Armor Rating, providing additional protection. Found on the B-01 Tactical (starting armor), B-08 Light Gunner, and B-27 Fortified Commando sets.
Fortified: Reduces recoil by 30% when crouching or prone and provides up to 50% explosive resistance. Available on the B-27 Fortified Commando.
Med-Kit: Increases your stim capacity by two and extends their health-recovering effects by two seconds. Found on the CM-09 Bonesnapper and CM-21 Trench Paramedic.
Democracy Protects: Offers a 50% chance to avoid lethal damage and prevents damage from chest hemorrhaging.
Siege-Ready: Helps with ammo economy, particularly useful against the Illuminate.
Stratagems: Super Earth's Arsenal
Stratagems are powerful abilities called in from your ship, offering offensive, defensive, and support options. They are unlocked from your Ship Management Terminal using 'Requisitions'.
S-Tier Stratagems (Highly Recommended)
Orbital Laser: An auto-targeting beam that devastates targets in a designated area, capable of taking down large foes. Has limited uses per mission. Can be redirected by pinging an enemy.
Railgun: (See Support Weapons above)
Quasar Cannon: A powerful support weapon.
Expendable Anti-Tank (EAT-17): Excellent for quickly eliminating heavy armored threats.
Autocannon: (See Support Weapons above)
Flamethrower: (See Support Weapons above)
Shield Generator Pack: Provides personal protection, crucial for survival on higher difficulties.
Orbital 380mm HE Barrage: A chaotic but incredibly effective barrage for clearing large areas and destroying Automaton bases, detector towers, and fabricators.
Orbital Gas Strike: Creates a massive area of denial, stopping enemies and damaging unarmored foes like Illuminate 'zombies'.
Orbital Precision Strike: A focused, powerful strike.
MLS-4X Commando: A strong support weapon.
A-Tier Stratagems (Great in Specific Situations)
Eagle Airstrike: A versatile general-purpose airstrike.
Eagle 500kg Bomb: An extremely powerful airstrike capable of destroying bug nests, buildings, and large groups of enemies.
