Introduction to Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts significantly shifts the series' gameplay focus from traditional platforming to custom-built vehicles, which are crucial for progressing through the game. Players are tasked with designing and piloting various vehicles to complete missions across different worlds. The game emphasizes creativity and strategic building to overcome challenges, ranging from races to combat and puzzle-solving.
General Gameplay Strategies
Note Management: Notes are the in-game currency. It is advised to primarily spend Notes on Jolly Dodger's Jiggies, Boggy's Gym, and Humba Wumba's shop for useful blueprints. Avoid spending Notes on bribing the police chief or on unnecessary tips, as this can hinder 100% completion. You should also spend 10 Notes on combinations for each Trapdoor Tower to access Mumbo Crates.
Jinjos: Helping Jinjos provides Jinjo Tokens. While collecting all 72 isn't mandatory, earning at least one bingo at King Jingaling's Bingo Palace in the Seaside District is recommended for an achievement and offers Notes and other prizes.
Hovering Glitch: A useful trick involves placing a flat object like a bench or crate in your cart, standing on it, selecting your trolley with the wrench, and holding the right trigger (cn_RT) to hover. This can grant early access to some part crates.
Systematic Exploration: Thoroughly explore every inch of each level, taking your time to uncover hidden areas and secrets, including Jiggies and musical notes.
Vehicle Building Fundamentals and Design Tips
Vehicle creation is a core aspect of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, requiring players to adapt their designs to various challenge requirements. Key factors to consider during construction include:
Speed: Primarily influenced by the addition or removal of engines. More engines increase speed but consume more fuel. Speed also decreases with added weight.
Fuel: Essential for engines and jets. Adding more engines necessitates more fuel, which in turn adds weight to the vehicle.
Ammo: Required for weapons. More powerful weapons demand more ammo. For races, consider removing weapons and ammo to reduce weight.
Weight: Doesn't always negatively affect a vehicle; the optimal weight is often specific to the situation. It impacts speed and balance.
Balance and Stability: Attaching heavy components unevenly can lead to instability. Consider the center of gravity to prevent vehicles from tipping. For hovercrafts, balancing upward lift (from propellers/engines) with downward pull (from sinkers or heavy blocks) is crucial to maintain a stable hover. Experimentation with block types (heavy vs. super) can significantly alter vehicle feel and function by shifting weight.
Specific Vehicle Types:
* Watercraft: Should be lightweight and buoyed by an equal number of Floaters on all sides to ensure even flotation. A Propeller improves mobility.
* Aircraft: Crucially requires wings for functionality.
* Combat Vehicles: Prioritize defense and firepower with heavy-duty chassis, large wheels for stability, powerful weapons (cannons, buzz saws), and armor plating. Maintain a low center of gravity.
* Utility Vehicles: For missions requiring specific tools or carrying capacity, focus on a versatile chassis with attachments for tools (cranes, drills), cargo bays, and adjustable suspension.
Experimentation: The game encourages players to experiment with different parts and designs. A well-balanced design is often more effective than simply cramming every available part onto a vehicle. Carefully read mission briefings to tailor your build precisely to the objective.
Key Vehicle Parts and How to Obtain Them
Vehicle parts are obtained through various means, including Mumbo's awards for collecting Jiggies, finding crates, and winning Grunty battles.
Mumbo's Awards (Jiggy Milestones): Mumbo awards new parts as you collect a certain number of Jiggies. Examples include:
* 5 Jiggies: Small engine, Small fuel, Small propeller x2, Egg gun, Small ammo.
* 10 Jiggies: Standard wheel x4, Medium engine, Standard wing x2, Bumper x4, Light Body Set.
* 20 Jiggies: High Grip Wheels x2, Balloon x6, Medium Fuel, Medium Ammo, Liquid Squirter.
* And so on, up to 110 Jiggies for the Super Engine.
Grunty's Upgrades: Defeating Grunty in each game world's specific Act will provide permanent upgrades to your Showdown Town Trolley.
* Nutty Acres Act 3: High Grip Wheels.
* Logbox 720 Act 3: Floaters.
* Banjoland Act 4: Springs.
* Jiggoseum Act 4: Scuba Seat.
* Jiggoseum Act 5: Laser gun (can disintegrate laser walls).
* Terrarium of Terror Act 5: Horn.
Crates: Crates are found throughout Showdown Town and other worlds, containing parts, money, extra lives, Jiggies, and notes. Some crates require specific upgrades (like High Grip Wheels or the Scuba Seat) to access.
Stop 'n' Swop Crates: If you have a Banjo-Kazooie (Xbox Live Arcade) save file and collect the colored eggs and the Ice Key in that game, special Mumbo Crates containing unique accessories will appear in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Locations include atop Boggy's gym for the Ice Key Crate (Flag), in the boathouse under the Banjoland doors for the Pink Egg Crate (Fluffy Dice), and on a rooftop south of the Jiggy bank for the Cyan Egg Crate (Mole on a Pole).
Humba Wumba's Blueprints: Humba Wumba sells useful blueprints that can aid in certain challenges.
Pre-made Vehicles: Players can buy and win blueprints for pre-made vehicles. Some missions may even require specific pre-made vehicles. Winning challenges with assigned L.O.G.'s Choice vehicles will also grant their blueprints.
