Understanding Progression in Terraria
Unlike many RPGs, Terraria does not feature a conventional leveling system with experience points or character levels. Instead, a player's power and advancement are measured by their equipment, increased health and mana, and the bosses they have defeated, which in turn unlock new areas, items, and challenges. The game's progression follows a cyclical pattern of exploration, resource gathering, equipment upgrades, and boss battles. Therefore, "leveling up" in Terraria refers to the continuous cycle of getting stronger and moving through the game's distinct stages: Pre-Hardmode, Hardmode, and the various post-Moon Lord challenges.
Pre-Hardmode: Laying the Foundation
Rapid progression in Pre-Hardmode focuses on establishing a strong base, acquiring essential gear, and efficiently defeating early bosses to transition into Hardmode.
Initial Setup and Resource Gathering
Upon spawning, prioritize gathering wood and stone, which are crucial for basic items and structures.
Build a Base and NPC Housing: Constructing several houses early on is vital to attract NPCs like the Merchant and Demolitionist. NPCs sell essential items and provide services. A simple house requires walls, a door, a table, a chair, and torches. Consider building a large structure that can be divided into multiple rooms for future NPCs.
Explore and Loot: Search surface chests and pots for early gear, mobility accessories (like Cloud in a Bottle and Hermes Boots), and explosives. Explosives from the Demolitionist can significantly speed up mining and resource collection.
Increase Health: Hunt for Heart Crystals underground to increase your maximum health to 400. It's recommended to save Heart Crystals until you have 15 to go from 100 HP directly to 400 HP.
Early Gear and Mobility
Craft Basic Tools and Armor: Craft tools, weapons, and armor from early game ores like Copper/Tin, Iron/Lead, Silver/Tungsten, and Gold/Platinum. Cactus armor is also a decent early option.
Get a Grappling Hook: With 15 gems, you can craft a grappling hook, which greatly improves mobility.
Utilize Potions: Farm Moonglow and Blinkroot to craft Spelunking Potions for easier caving and resource finding. Gravity Potions can help explore floating islands for valuable items like the Starfury sword.
Fishing for Power: Craft an Iron fishing rod and use a bug net to collect bait. Fishing in the ocean can yield powerful early-game items like the Reaver Shark (a pickaxe equivalent to Molten Pickaxe for mining) and Sawtooth Shark (an axe equivalent to Cobalt Chainsaw). You can also fish for crates which can contain ores and bars.
Pre-Hardmode Boss Progression
Efficiently defeating bosses is key to advancing. Prepare an arena with platforms, campfires, and heart lanterns for regeneration.
Eye of Cthulhu & King Slime: These are often the first bosses. Shurikens or grenades can be effective against the Eye of Cthulhu. King Slime is generally easy with grenades.
Brain of Cthulhu / Eater of Worlds: Defeating these bosses (depending on your world's evil biome) will allow meteorites to spawn, providing Meteorite armor and the Space Gun, a powerful early magic weapon.
Skeletron: Defeating Skeletron grants access to the Dungeon, which contains valuable items, including the Muramasa. You'll typically need over 300 HP and a prepared arena.
Queen Bee: Farming Queen Bee can provide Bee armor and the Beenades, which are highly effective against the Wall of Flesh.
Wall of Flesh: This boss triggers Hardmode. Build a long bridge in the Underworld for the fight. Beenades and the Phoenix Blaster with Meteor Shot are recommended. Having Molten armor and Hellstone weapons is also a reliable option.
Preparing for Hardmode
Before defeating the Wall of Flesh, consider making world improvements:
Hellevator: Digging a straight shaft down to the Underworld provides quick access to all depths and saves time for mining and farming.
Biome Containment: Dig four-block wide tunnels around your evil biomes (Corruption/Crimson) and around your base to prevent their rapid spread in Hardmode.
AFK Farms: Building pre-Hardmode AFK farms for souls or money can be beneficial for Hardmode.
Hardmode: Escalating Power
Hardmode significantly increases difficulty and introduces new enemies, ores, and bosses. The focus shifts to quickly upgrading gear to handle the new challenges.
Early Hardmode Gear Acquisition
Hardmode Ores: Obtain Hardmode ores by either smashing Demon/Crimson Altars with the Pwnhammer (dropped by Wall of Flesh) to spawn new ores, or by fishing for Hardmode crates. Fishing is often preferred as it avoids the spread of evil biomes that altar smashing can cause.
Ore Progression: Mine Cobalt/Palladium, then Mythril/Orichalcum, and finally Adamantite/Titanium. Craft new pickaxes, anvils, and forges as you progress through the ore tiers.
Hardmode Armor: Aim for a full set of Adamantite or Titanium armor, or one of the hybrid sets like Frost or Forbidden armor, which offer strong stats and set bonuses. Spider armor is also a good option for summoners.
Weapon Upgrades: Prioritize getting a powerful Hardmode weapon. Examples include the Blade Tongue (Crimson), Toxicarp (Corruption), or Crystal Serpent (Hallow) from fishing. For ranged users, the Daedalus Stormbow (from Hallowed Mimics) is extremely potent.
Wings: Acquire wings as soon as possible for crucial Hardmode mobility. Leaf Wings, sold by the Witch Doctor in a Jungle biome at night, are an early option.
Accessories: Farm Souls of Light and Night in the cavern layers of the Hallow and evil biomes, respectively, to craft various items and accessories. Mimics also drop powerful accessories.
Hardmode Boss Progression
Mechanical Bosses (The Destroyer, The Twins, Skeletron Prime): The Destroyer is often considered the easiest to start with. Defeating these bosses is crucial for further progression and crafting powerful items like the Megashark and Hallowed armor.
Plantera: Locate and defeat Plantera's Bulb in the Underground Jungle. Chlorophyte Shotbow with Holy Arrows is a strong choice.
Golem: Found in the Jungle Temple. Danger Sense and Hunter potions can help navigate traps.
Duke Fishron (Optional but Recommended): Offers powerful drops for all classes.
Lunar Events & Moon Lord: After Golem, the Lunar Events (Pillars) will trigger, leading to the final boss, the Moon Lord. Craft powerful weapons like the Vortex Beater (ranged) and Phantasm (ranged) for these encounters.
General Tips for Faster Progression
Don't Stop Moving: In speedrunning, continuous movement and action are key.
Explosives are Your Friend: Bombs and dynamite are excellent for quick mining and clearing areas.
Optimize Inventory: Efficient inventory management, dropping
